History
Georges Hartmann (1843-1900) started publishing privately in 1868, operating from 19 Boulevard de la Madeleine in Paris. His star property was Jules Massenet, for whom he was exclusive publisher from 1870-1891. Other prominent French composers published by Hartmann were Saint-Saëns, Bizet, Delibes, Godard and Lalo. Hartmann was also an accomplished librettist, contributing to works by Massenet, Messager, Hahn and others. Bankruptcy ultimately forced Hartmann to sell his catalog to Henri Heugel in 1891, who absorbed his properties and continued to publish new works by many of his exclusive composers. Hartmann continued his publishing activity after the sale in association with Eugéne Fromont, notably by encouraging Claude Debussy with an annual salary of 6000 francs starting in 1894. Hartmann published several early Debussy works under the Fromont imprint and the score of Pelleas et Melisande (published 1902) was dedicated to his memory.
