Six Intertwined (Solo Multipercussion Etudes) is a composition that showcases the expressive range and wide variety of texture offered by the mix of vibraphone and unpitched instruments. The inspiration for the piece comes from Olivier Messiaen “collage” techniques, in particular the Regard du Silence, from his Vingt Regards, that also provides the outline of the theme of the first etude. The first etude is a strict four voices rhythmic canon, while the other etudes are in free form. They are broken down, mixed with sections of the first, and reassembled as if one were to form a collage. The piece, a set of etudes, does not have a programmatic intent.
