History

Merton Music was founded by Theo Wyatt (1920—2017) a London-based civil servant and amateur cellist. In 1983 he founded Oriel Library, a home publishing venture for recorder music.
In 1996 he started Merton Music to publish PD string chamber music, and in 14 years the catalog grew to 1300 items. Some of the items, such as String Quintet, Op.5 No.1 (Eybler, Joseph), were typsets by Wyatt and his wife Kitty. Wyatt gave a history of his enterprise in an interview (2004). One special feature of Merton Music's string library was its unique grading system, which is very helpful for amateur chamber music groups.
Finally, in 2010 Theo passed on the business to John Harding, who has continued Theo's mission with his Ourtext music publishing venture.
The Merton-Ourtext Project at IMSLP enabled the upload of the majority of the Merton catalogue up through 2010, which can be browsed on this page.
