URTEXT EDITION

This is an urtext/critical/scholarly/scientific edition (or a simple re-engraving). Any commentary or critical apparatus, if protected by copyright, should not be included in the scan(s) available here. This edition was published by Bärenreiter in Germany over 25 years ago and is in the public domain in its country of origin.

In Canada, new editions/re-engravings of public domain works (when not including new original material) should be in the public domain due to failing to meet the threshold of originality. In most European Union countries, these editions (except new original material) are generally protected for no more than 25 years from publication (30 years in Poland). In the United States, copyright can only apply to new creative work, and the re-engraving of a public domain piece (not including new additions of creative material) should not qualify for a new copyright, despite copyright claims (which properly would only apply to new material).

You may need to check the publication date and details of the work's first publication in order to determine the work's copyright status, especially for the United States.

Misc. Notes completion composed 4 May 2024
This completion incorporates the last page of Mozart's fragment as well (going to bar 110).
The letters M. and B. throughout the score indicate which parts were composed by Mozart or the arranger, respectively.
To make it more accessible, this completion is intended for the more common standard clarinet, despite Mozart's intention having been a basset clarinet. With the exception of a low E-flat that Mozart wrote in the existing fragment, it does not use the basset notes; and an alternative is provided to play this note an octave up.
The completion writes up to written g''' for the clarinet. Although the completer is not aware of an example of Mozart writing this note, it seemed musically expedient and is within the modern clarinet's normal range. Additionally, Mozart included higher notes for the basset clarinet as time passed: the 1789 Clarinet Quintet only goes up to d''' (with a somewhat dubious e''' that probably stems from the original editor editing out the basset notes), but the 1791 Clarinet Concerto goes up to f'''. Considering that Mozart's practice of taking up fragments again at a later date means that such completions in a way reconstruct what Mozart might have done around 1792 or 1793 had he lived, going one tone higher seems reasonable.
The main theme of the fragment is based on Ferrando's aria "Ah, lo veggio" from Mozart's Così fan tutte, and this completion borrows significantly from it.

Navigation etc.

Alfred Einstein believed this was written in 1789, as an early draft for the finale of the Clarinet Quintet KV 581, and that Mozart later decided to use the main theme for Ferrando's aria while composing Così fan tutte. But Alan Tyson points out that the autograph is written on a paper type not seen before Così fan tutte, and suggests that the fragment was probably written after the opera, most likely in 1790.
