"Totenlied" for solo clarinet was originally completed in May 2003 as part of a larger piece entitled Conversations, a collaborative work by six composers from Monash University that featured three clarinetists and electronics. This version is a minor revision, prepared in 2017 for Italian clarinetist Sauro Berti, who gave the world premiere performance on 18th December 2017 in Porto, Portugal.
The title pays homage to the music of Gustav Mahler, whose influence can be felt in the works opening and closing passages.
