This rhapsody was originally conceived as Movement Two of a Viola Sonata. Stockley Bridge lies on the way to Styhead Pass and Great Gable in the English Lake District, where Smith loved to walk and camp with his friends, including fellow musicians Saskia and Andrew. Smith wrote of it: "Here at the edge of the rain-ripe fells / Is a place where the rucksacks rest"
