History

Founded in 1907 by a group of English composers to promote British music (the name was a arbitrary decision). The firm quickly became a significant force with the publication of works by composers such as Holst, Vaughan Williams, and Stanford. Major scholarly series include the Carnegie Collection of British Music (from 1917), The English Madrigal School (1913–24), William Byrd: Complete Works (1937–50), The English School of Lutenist Song Writers (1920-31), Early English Church Music (from 1963) and Musica Britannica (from 1951). The publishing group Galliard, Ltd., which included Augener, Joseph Williams, and Joseph Weekes, was purchased in 1972.
