According to this WorldCat entry, the words were by Enrique Caruso, which makes it possible that he set the words to a well-known serenata for mandolin called "Notte stellata". If that work is ever uploaded, the melody can be compared, and this would move to that page under an arrangements tab.
That same WorldCat entry above is the only one involving voice, and it gives the instrumentation as voice and piano. However, it is a 2011 publication and it is impossible to know whether it or the orchestral version is the original. Tagging is therefore very much subject to correction.
