Extra Information ​Montesardo's Nuova inventione d'intavolatura (1606) is probably the 1st documentary evidence for the Italian form of what is called Alfabetto/Abecedario. It is the usage of letters (Spanish version: numerals, "cifras") for the meaning of chords. The Italian form also means: the line on top is the lowest string/chord. A lot of rules are not standardised. So, it is always necessary to look what the author means, e.g. Montesardo used small letters to indicate that the halved note duration is wanted. A dot right beside enlarges a halve of the note duration and the next letter is shortened a half. The placing of the letters below or above the line means the direction of playing rasgueado from down to top or vice versa.
