IMSLP talk:Music Publishers

Any suggestion how to deal with multiple entries (plate number styles) for one publisher? The point is I want these lines on a different layout level than the main line of the publisher, but can't just leave the publisher name empty, as each line need to be identifiable after sorting on the other columns. I've tried some different possibilities here:

  • Hiding the name of the publisher until mouseover
  • Indenting the publisher with an arrow
  • On the same level, but regular instead of bold typeface
  • The collapsible table, which was never working nicely

Plate number/year tables for French publishers

More tables like this can be found in this - quite expensive - book:

Title: Dictionnaire des éditeurs de musique francais Devriès, Anik & Lesure, François Éditions Minkoff, 1979.

ISBN 2-8266-0460-0 and 2-8266-0461-9

Edwin B. Marks

I have a piece from this publishing company, but it says the title is actually Edward B. Marks, not Edwin. I don't know anything about the company, but that's what I noticed. Jefflyon 13:20, 22 June 2010 (MST)

I think you're correct about that. Edwin was first name of Kalmus. Confirmed - Edward is correct. Thanks. Carolus 21:25, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Overhaul

I think that some substantial work needs to be done on this page; trying to find more data and publishers, add the publishers that we have, etc.-- Snailey (_@/) Talk to Me Email me 22:55, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

and some information, and soon pages, for major if maybe under-the-radar publishers (the ones who keep showing up... not necessarily influential. certainly ones whose plate tables it might be useful to pepper-point, splatter, or whatever I suppose the technical terminology is. :) Eric 08:50, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

In this connection I note a partial list of publishers active in 1918 here. We don't have some of them - not rare ones (Klemm seems to turn up fairly often in HMB, for instance, at least HMB for the 1910s) - listed here at all. So need to work on improvement.. (yes, me too of course- so far as I can contribute that is. I don't know the biography of these publishers etc. ...) Eric 21:53, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

[Not-so] Miniature project

We have publications by most of the publishers listed on this page. Regretfully, there are many that are either not listed altogether, or do not link to a publisher page complete with information and plate tables. I think we would benefit from a small scale project aimed at fixing this problem. I will try try to add a couple of publishers per day, starting first by creating pages for those already listed without a category. Does anyone else want to jump in and lend a hand? Respectfully, Emery 00:32, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

I think this is a very good idea and I'd be more than happy to help you out. With which publishers should I start? Maybe one of us could start at the top of the alphabet and the other could start at the bottom, and then work inward with creating new pages with plate listings, etc. What do you think? KGill talk email 01:53, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi KGill. Thanks for volunteering. I like your idea of one of us starting at the top and the other at the bottom. The only problem that could occur is if other people decide to volunteer and become confused as to where to start. For now, would you be OK with starting from the bottom and working your way up? Respectfully, Emery 02:04, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it :-) Sure, I'm fine with that - I'll start tonight. Cheers, KGill talk email 02:05, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

It's a good idea. My one caution has to do with the issue we were discussing on the forum with respect to magazines and periodicals: should music publishers be included in the "People" category? If so, how best to integrate the pages we have (some of which have extensive histories, plate number listings and the like) with a category page in which numerous works would be listed? If adding the new publishers doesn't create a potential 'merging' problem down the road, full speed ahead. Carolus 03:36, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

I'd also have serious reservations about placing pages for publishers into the 'people' category, and would agree that separate categories/templates for publishers would be a much better idea. Well done to Emery for attempting to grasp this particular nettle, and I'll help out wherever I can — P.davydov 07:05, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
Obviously I love this project, having worked on this problem rather extensively :). I'll be happy to help come weekend time—try to find good ones that aren't listed, perhaps. If that fails, I'll start at M.-- Snailey (_@/) Talk to Me Email me 03:52, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Fantastic, Perlnerd666! Beautiful work so far, KGill. Respectfully, Emery 04:04, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry I've not been contributing too much to this project. I've been busy elsewhere and with the copyright project. I do think that an eventual goal, once everything is filled out, is to standardize all the information to make this a more organized sortable list. That way a person can sort by city, plate number, publisher name, and dates. I think it's possible that would be an even more useful and visually appealing resource for publisher information. Henry Tolman, publisher

Going on the thread above, I was looking for the Boston-based 19th century publisher Henry Tolman, but didn't find a page. But a search reveals there are a number of publications of his represented. What is the procedure for creating a new page for this publisher (and for others in the future)? -- Kosboot 16:58, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Kosboot! You can simply click on this link - Henry Tolman - to a currently empty page and start editing. For the standardized style we try to follow for publisher pages please refer to IMSLP:Music Publishers/Manual of Style. Of course, you can see the style "in action" by editing any of the publisher pages. Be sure to place [[Category:Music Publishers]] at the bottom of Tolman's page so that it will show up in Category:Music Publishers automatically. To get Henry Tolman added to the huge table on Music Publishers you'll have to manually edit the page to add the information. Looking forward to your contribution! --Cypressdome 23:22, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
