Program notes:
Dorremí was the first of two cats to come into my home. Her first days of life, as far as I know, were inside the engine of an old car. In her brief life, she brought and found great change and joy in her new home. Vivaldi Mordelón was the second cat to come home. He was rescued from an abandoned litter, where his brothers and mother would have been euthanized if no home was found for them. Dorremí soon found refuge within the sheets and blankets of her new home, seeking to enter them however and whenever possible, especially at night. Similarly, Vivaldi Mordelón found refuge within the sheets, blankets, and arms of his new home and family, demanding to be within these arms and blankets every night. After daily scratches, bites, jumps, and runs, it is time for a cat nap. Every cat owner knows the tenderness that those sleeping furballs can make us feel. They can be so… angelic… And they play and bite and sleep and bring joy, and play again and bite and sleep and bring joy… and with this piece I describe a normal day with them and pay homage to those misunderstood beings—sometimes demonized, but who are definitely mystical beings full of tenderness. It is a special tribute to Dorremí who, at eight months of age, left home never to return; and it is a thank you to Vivaldi Mordelón for continuing, after six years, to sleep within these arms and blankets.
