Commentary on the movements

Prima Pars:

  1. Coro: Wachet! betet! betet! wachet! The solo trumpet here takes a leading part, either doubling, or as a soloist. The joyful character of this movement is expressed through the repetition of both notes and words.
  2. Recitativo (Bass): Erschrecket, ihr verstockten Sünder! A recitative with the accompaniment of the entire orchestra.
  3. Aria (Alto): Wenn kömmt der Tag, an dem wir ziehen. A continuo aria; in 1723, the organ played this part, but in 1731, only the cello.
  4. Recitativo (Tenor): Auch bei dem himmlischen Verlangen. Secco recitative.
  5. Aria (Soprano): Laßt der Spötter Zungen schmähen. Terraced dynamics are created orchestrationally here, an unusual and notable effect in Bach. The first violin here has an unusually virtuosic part.
  6. Recitativo (Tenor): Jedoch bei dem unaritgen Geschlechte. Secco recitative.
  7. Choral: Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele. A plain chorale setting.

Seconda Pars:

  1. Aria (Tenor): Hebt euer Haupt empor. The strings now separate out again. Imitation is thin on the ground here, but the harmony is always full instead.
  2. Recitativo (Bass): Ach, soll nicht dieser große Tag. A recitative again with trumpet and strings.
  3. Aria (Bass): Seligster Erquickungstag. The entire corpus of instruments is here required again. However, the aria starts in a wonderfully serene fashion with continuo only. Then, the middle section, brings down the entire orchestra upon us.
  4. Choral: Nicht nach Welt, nach Himmel nicht. A plain chorale setting.
