Alfred Dörffel (1821–1905)
Because it was not available for consultation at the time, the editor of this score did not use Bach's autograph manuscript as a source for the Bach-Gesellschaft edition. The BG edition therefore contains occasional differences from the autograph. Perfomers are urged to consult the J.S. Bach autograph, or a modern critical edition, to settle questions of interpretation (especially in matters of phrasing and articulation).
This exceptional document brings together indications and comments provided by George Enescu to violinist Serge Blanc during his years of study with the maestro, including sonority, phrasing, tempi, fingering, and expression, culmination of the life’s work of a master considered as one of the greatest interpreters of this work.
