This independent concert suite derived from the composer's cantata The Martyr of Antioch (1880) is unrecorded in any catalogue of his works. It was presumably devised to coincide with a renewed interest in the cantata, which was performed on stage by the Carl Rosa Opera Company in 1898.

No performance has thus far been traced and the full score and orchestral parts were destroyed in the 1964 fire at the warehouse of Chappell & Co. In 1900 Boosey & Co. published an arrangement of the Suite for military band: a complete set of parts is held by the British Library, London (Music Collections h.1549).
