Wikipedia and other sources seem to agree with each other (and to disagree with this list, and with the 'piano sonata opus 5' page on this site) that Balakirev's sonata of 1856-57 is his sonata op.5, while his sonata of 1900-5, instead, is either without opus or was given an opus number of 102. Is there anything definite and established on this? Eric 04:44, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
I agree- yes, I wonder about the origin of the references to sonata no. 2 as op. 102, which I see here and there, but it seems not universally agreed-to... Wish I could find out just because such things tweak my interest *g* (I don't think I've heard either work unfortunately. I think I'd like them very much- I've seen at least one in score, I know, before IMSLP-days ;) ) Of course before moving *g* having looked at the 1856-57 sonata can you confirm whether Piano Sonata, Op.5 (Balakirev, Mily) is the first or second sonata btw :) - I assume it's the second just mislabeled as to opus, but you actually have seen the first sonata and (if you remember it or have it before you?) can compare them... Thanks! (It may be that the 1856-7 sonata wasn't even published until after the date on that page, making my question moot, or something- but I have to ask of course- silly and obvious question though it is, apologies for which...)
