Talk:Eglogue bachique (Bousset, Jean-Baptiste Drouart de)

Need to look at score- does Bach in Bachique refer to someone in the family Bach? That might affect proper capitalization also... (Schissel)

No! It refers to Bacchus. Pierre.chepelov 08:19, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Actually, given that this was written in 1694 and that the family Bach had some musician members but none of really international renown at that time, that makes good sense. Would a Greek deity's name be capitalized in this sort of (perhaps adjectival, sort of) context in French? Eric 08:23, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Well, it is an adjectival form (in English : 'Bacchical Eclogue'). At this time it could have been capitalized (see [1]), but according to the standard French capitalization rules, and IMSLP's (I think that in this case the second respects the first...), it shouldn't.
By the way, do you know why the composer's first name was deleted from the category? Pierre.chepelov 08:48, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

At a guess- it was KGill who actually made the move and who you would want to ask - at a guess on my part, because authoritative sources like authorities.loc.gov use Bousset, Monsieur de rather than Bousset, Jean-Baptiste de and we usually try to follow their lead more or less, in deciding how to 'list' a composer name...
