The Symphonia armonie celestium revelationum, and Ordo virtutum comprise the final 16 folios of the Riesencodex, the monumental collection of Hildegard’s literary and musical œuvre, and was compiled at Bingen am Rhein between approximately 1175 and 1190, partially under her direct supervision.

Hildegard of Bingen’s musical works are principally found in two 12th century manuscripts.

  • The Wiesbaden or Riesencodex Hs.2 contains all but two of Hildegard’s compositions; the omissions are the psalm antiphon “O frondens virga” and the votive antiphon “Laus Trinitati”.
  • The Dendermonde or Villarenser Codex Ms. 9. contains 57 of Hildegard’s compositions including the two works mentioned above (a facsimile of this codex has been published but is not currently available on IMSLP).
