From Brown's "Louis Spohr: A Critical Biography" "it is possible he would have consigned the manuscript [of the quartets] to oblivion... had it not been for his publisher, Kühnel of Leipzig [who having heard them in 1807 and having already published the concerto no.2 and duets opus 3 persuaded Spohr] to allow the quartets to be published." (p.44, 1984 Cambridge University Press edition) (composed in 1807 also, see Brown, p.43. "Probably composed over the preceding two or three years" - p.44.)
