Commentary on the movements

Prima Pars:

  1. Chorus: Schwingt freudig euch empor. This bipartite movement is derived mostly from the two opening figures.
  2. Choral: Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland. The first of the chorales which replace recitatives in this cantata. Here, the chorale is exposed as a duet with voices doubled by oboes.
  3. Aria (Tenor): Die Liebe zieht mit sanften Schritten. "A celebration of the entry of Jesus."1
  4. Chorale: Zwingt die Saiten in Cythara. A plain chorale setting.

Secunda Pars:

  1. Aria (bass): Willkommen, werter Schatz. An joyful aria welcoming the Lord.
  2. Chorale (Tenor): Der du bist dem Vater gleich. A true cantus firmus in the tenor with the oboes d'amore accompanying in fast notes.
  3. Aria (Soprano): Auch mit gedämpften, schwachen Stimmen. The obbligato is a muted violin. The entire aria shares this character, echoing the text.
  4. Chorale: Lob sei Gott dem Vater ton. A plain chorale setting.

Version History

  1. BWV 36c (1725): For a teacher's birthday. Schwingt freudig euch empor
  2. BWV 36a (1726): Reused as a birthday cantata for Princess Charlotte Friederike Wilhelmine of Cöthen. Steigt freudig in die Luft
  3. BWV 36 (1725-1730): Sacred parody. Schwingt freudig euch empor
  4. BWV 36 (1731): Sacred parody. Schwingt freudig euch empor
  5. BWV 36b (1735): For the Rivinus family. Die Freude reget sich
