Root & Cady of Chicago published from 1858 until 1871, when a fire destroyed the premises. It was later known as Root & Co. The plates were bought by Brainard in 1871. Root was composer George Frederick Root's (1820—1895) brother, Ebenezer Towner Root (1822-1896), and the company was cofounded with Chauncey Marvin Cady (1824 - 1889). G.F. Root, Ebenezer Root, G.F. Root's son and three others (see the Root & Cady Wikipedia page) started The Root & Sons Music Company in 1875, and published as late as 1882. A separate Root and Sons, later absorbed by Church operated in Cincinatti.
