Misc. Notes Horns are in F (compared to in G in the original). The Turkish drum here is written on one line, compared to Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich Volume 29 which gives it in bass clef with the G just below middle C and the G an octave below that, suggesting a high and a low sound is to be obtained from the drum; that distinction is maintained here by using upward stems for the 'high' notes.

Notes This score reflects the use of trumpets in B with the low pedal notes reassigned to the trombones, but it shouldn't be any trouble to either use this score for a performance with either natural trumpets in C or modern trumpets in C. The higher two trombones are labelled I. and II. tenor trombones in this score but alto trombone and tenor trombone in the parts below; actual tenor trombones should be used for both parts but higher notes are expected of the first player.

For the woodwind and horn pairs, use the parts given above. For the trumpet pair, you have a number of options with this arrangement:

  • Use the trumpet parts given above for natural trumpets in C, in which case you can have your librarian cross out the corresponding pedal tones where they've been reassigned to the trombones.
  • Use the trumpet parts given above for modern trumpets in C, making sure to have your librarian cross out the pedal tones in the trumpet parts (don't even let them think about trying those notes).
  • Use the trumpet parts given below for modern trumpets in B-flat. No alteration is needed, as the pedal tones are not even included in the trumpet part and are covered in the trombone parts.

The alto trombone is "alto" only in the sense that I wrote higher notes for it than for the "tenor trombone." I expect the player to use a tenor trombone.

As for percussion, if you have small cymbals and a Turkish drum, excellent. If not, the snare drum and bass drum parts given below represent one possible way to make do.

For Guerrilla Band (del Arte)

A guerrilla band (such as the Detroit Party Marching Band) could have many of the same instruments as a standard concert or military band. However, they almost certainly don't have oboes or bassoons. So in this arrangement, the two alto saxophones take over the duties of the oboes. Something will have to be done about the bassoons. Since I changed the key to B (so as to not have the E instruments playing in A), only the unpitched percussion parts from the original or the orchestration may be used with this arrangement. As to whether any guerrilla band uses this arrangement, that's a tactical decision for the musicians to make.

Misc. Notes Many oboe notes have been taken down an octave so as to suit the alto sax range. The tuba essentially takes care of the second bassoon; there are some Bs outside the instrument's practical range (as given by Kennan in his classic orchestration book) by a semitone but I think they aren't so bad since each of those is preceded by a lower instance of the pitch-class—but I've never played tuba, so I could be wrong. The bass clarinet in B takes care of the first bassoon, but if necessary this part could also be used by baritone.
