WO 12 The Plough Boy, with Variations Piano 1788 B major Keyboard This work is doubtful, although some evidence exists that supports Clementi's authorship of the variations: the 1823 Catalogue of Vocal & Instrumental Music published by Clementi, Collard & Collard indicates the existence of "Plough Boy Clementi 1-0" in the section containing all of Clementi's known variations; although these variations were published anonymously by Longman & Broderip, Clementi had published Opp.16-21 with said company just before these variations appeared; and continental publishers sold these variations under Clementi's name, especially in tandem with WO 2 and WO 5. The theme originated in William Shield's opera The Farmer (1787).
