Misc. Comments
For the Feast of Purification.
Commentary on the movements
- Aria: Ich habe genug. A yearning expressive theme opens this tightly wound aria, which (like all of the arias) is for the soloist, oboe, and strings.
- Recitativo: Ich habe genug. Secco recitative.
- Aria: Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen. This is the "slumber aria." The drone-like figures, modal quality, and other "loosening" elements make this gentle aria a wonderful word-painting.
- Recitativo: Mein Gott! wenn kömmt das schöne: Nun! Secco recitative.
- Aria: Ich freue mich auf meinen Tod. "One of those pieces cloe to dance—with clear, periodic phrase structure, enlivened by strong rhythmic impulses"1. Perhaps a bit inconclusive, but still a wonderful, joyous aria to conclude.
