Commentary on the movements
Dialogus
- Sinfonia. An energetic concertante movement for the organ. This is the final movement of a now-lost concerto, which is the model for BWV 1053 as well. Also, the cantata BWV 169 (Gott soll allein mein Herze haben) utilises the first and second movements.
- Aria (Bass): Ich geh' und suche mit Verlangen. For obbligato organ, bass and continuo—a notably virtuosic organ part again.
- Recitativo (Soprano, Bass): Mein Mahl ist Zubereit. An operatic-style dialogue which, with the second, contains the bulk of the text of this cantata. Strings accompany.
- Aria (Soprano): Ich bin herrlich, ich bin schön. With Oboe d'amore and Violoncello Piccolo. A "masterpiece of Bach's art of Characterization."1
- Recitativo (Soprano, Bass): Mein Glaube hat mich selbst so angezogen. Another dramatic duo recitative.
- Aria/Chorale (Soprano, Bass): Dich hab ich je und je geliebet. "Among the richest in artistry of all Bach's cantata movements"1. Bach here puts the final duet and choral together into a single cohesive movement.
