This is a medley overture, written in the vein of John Christopher Pepusch's overture to Gay's Beggar's Opera (1728). It features snippets of popular tunes, notably: Lilliburlero, A Soldier and a Sailor, The Black Joke, Boys and Girls Come Out to Play, and George Frideric Handel's March in Scipio.
