The title of this piece is derived from the painting 'En 1795', by the dedicatee of this piece, the French artist Jules-Adolphe Goupil (1839-83), who specialised in genre and history paintings, particularly of the period of the French Revolution. A engraving of 'En 1795' appears on the cover page of this score. The painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1875, where it won a first-class medal, and was reproduced in the journal 'l'Univers illustré' in 1876. It depicts a lady in a very elaborate costume including a large hat.
