The music was written by Haydn in 1797 for the anthem of Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire, Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser. The same year, Haydn used it for the 2nd movement of his String Quartet No.62 in C major, Op.76 No.3 (which is also known as Kaiserquartett).
