Suckling edition notes
The manuscript has been very lightly edited. No additional articulations or dynamics have been added; printed slurs should be considered my interpretation of the occasionally ambiguous markings of the manuscript. The autograph’s beaming has been maintained; whilst sometimes it may be notational convenience, it is sometimes indicative of musical gesture.
The original soprano clef of the first violin part has been transcribed to treble clef. The shared alto clef staff for second violins and violas has been expanded into two staves in appropriate clefs.
The shorthands of the manuscript have been expanded; repeated ritornelli have been written out in full. In the second movement, bar 18, third beat, the original A natural has been corrected to a B natural. In the third movement, bar 105, first beat, the final C of the violoncello solo has been added. The autograph’s superfluous accidentals (when reading with modern conventions) have been removed.
This edition was prepared for a performance by the Editor with the Feinstein Ensemble in London on 13th June, 2013.
