Suckling edition notes
The manuscript has been very lightly edited. No additional articulations or dynamics have been added; printed slurs should be considered my interpretation of the sometimes ambiguous markings of the manuscript. The autograph’s beaming has been maintained; whilst sometimes it may be notational convenience, it is sometimes indicative of musical gesture.
The original clefs of the violoncello part have been retained, including the octave transposing treble clef (first movement, bars 71-81); Vivaldi’s use of this clef is curious as its range is only a tone higher than is notated elsewhere in tenor clef. The viola’s octave transposing bass clef in the same passage has been modernised to an alto clef.
The shorthands of the manuscript have been expanded; repeated ritornelli and repeated quavers have been written out in full. The missing viola part from the first movement, bar 13, has been added. A missing accidental from the first beat of the first movement, bar 44, of the violoncello part has been restored. The autograph’s superfluous accidentals (when reading with modern conventions) have been removed.
