- moved to the USA in late 1840s/early 1850s. (LoC cataloguing has "Szemelinyi as a variant, but scores catalogued themselves just have Szemelenyi.) His son, Ernest Szemelényi Jr. (1852–1919), was an amateur composer who studied with John Knowles Paine (Spitzer (2012), American Orchestras in the Nineteenth Century, pp.201–202).
