Stanford's Communion Services (in B flat, F, C, A and G) were written without Benedictus or Agnus Dei, because the practise of singing these parts of the liturgy had not been generally introduced when he wrote them. He subsequently wrote this setting of the Benedictus and Agnus Dei (for use with the Communion Services in B flat, F, C, and A) and another in B flat (for use with the Communion Service in G).
