Misc. Comments

  • Based on the fact that the lower voices follow the folksong tune, and the upper parts are treated more freely, there is an assumption that the upper parts are instrumental and the lower parts vocal.
  • This is the version in 4 voices. There is also a 6 voice version, accessible on CPDL.
  • Grove Music classifies this as a "canon 4 in 2", but the 6-voice version is in the (long) list of doubtful and misattributed works, though a note says "4-v version with a further canon added, which may stem from Josquin".
  • In Elders, Josquin Des Prez and His Musical Legacy: An Introductory Guide this is referred to as a chanson. Tagged for both chanson and canon.
