Misc. Comments
Described in a brief report in Dwight’s Journal of Music (Aug.15, 1868, p.296) (which usually had to just report the key!) as being in A♭, D♭ and G♭, for so it proves to be- not Milhaud-ish bitonality, but a succession of descending keys with no return to home.
Publication history-
- 1857 - first edition, Horace Waters
- 1868 - rights apparently transferred to Ditson (listed among the "latest music" published by Ditson in the August 15 1868 Dwight’s Journal. Could have been revised by the composer at this time; will see if the LoC has the 1857 edition after all to compare.) (1868 date of this version clearly visible also on first page of score.)
- 1885 - Ditson reprint (seems to be a 1868-era Ditson plate so the 1885 and 1868 printings are - probably - the same music.)
