Misc. Comments
For the Sunday after New Year.
Commentary on the movements
- [Chorale+Aria (Soprano, Bass)]1: Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid. A slow opening movement in French style. The soprano delivers the chorale melody unadorned, while the bass sings an expressive counterpoint.
- Recitativo (Bass): Verfolgt dich gleich die arge Welt. Secco recitative.
- Aria (Soprano): Ich bin vergnügt in meinem Leiden. Again, the soprano sings a slower, expressive part, where the violin here delivers the concertante part.
- Recitativo (Soprano): Kann es die Welt nicht lassen. Secco recitative.
- [Chorale+Aria (Soprano, Bass)]1: Ich hab für mir ein schwere Reis. An “overtly concerto-like chorale arrangement.” A joyous movement, to match the optimistic character of the text. However, the writing does betray many similarities to the first movement.
Version History
- 1727, lost original version
- 1733/4, revised version; revisions include new oboe parts, and a substituted new third movement. Only a continuo part survives of the original third movement.
