PREFATORY MATTER

Before the music proper are various prefaces. First a dedication to The Right Worshipful, Worthy and Virtuous Knight, Sir Thomas Mounson, and a general preface To the Readers Whomsoever.

Then Necessarie Observations Belonging to the Lute, and Lute playing, which is a delight in itself. Much of the advice it tends is still good today, e.g. "Chuse one Lesson thy self according to thy capacitie, which giue not ouer by looking ouer others, or straggling from one to another, till thou have got it reasonably perfect [...]."

Next we have Dowland's Other Necessary Observations, including For Chusing of Lute-strings, Of setting the right sizes of Strings upon the Lute, Of fretting the Lute, and Of Tuning the Lute.
