Misc. Comments

The musicologist George Pullen Jackson declared this collection “the worst” of all early publications of black religious folksongs -

“its tunes are uniformly the most bafflingly illiterate strings of notes on record.”

It is true that almost all the songs in the book require some adjustment to make the words fit.
