The violin and cello versions were insisted on- for financial reasons- by Novello, but not the composer's original idea. (Dibble, pp.105-6.)
The Novello edition was advertised in the May 1, 1881 Musical Times (and are mentioned in the Bibliographie de la France earlier still, March 5 1881 issue...), so: published between 1880 and 1881, at any rate. Dibble claims publication "soon after" the premiere in February 1880.
