Nielsen made three attempts to compose an opus with lieder in German.

  • First he set two lyrics by Richard Dehmel as 2 Gedichte, consisting of Stimme in Dunkeln and Schutzengel, as opus 29.
  • Later the same summer he composed two songs by Fritz Köpp: Abendfrieden & Waldnacht. He added "Stimme in Dunkeln" from the first attempt - and designated this as opus 29 also, changing the title to “3 Gedichte”.
  • Next year (1912) he composed one more song to a poem by Fritz Köpp: (Sorrent). He substituted this for "Stimme in Dunkeln" and designated this as opus 34. The new title became Drei Gedichte von Fritz Köpp.

The first performance of "Schutzengel" was 1912 in Lyngby, a small village outside Copenhagen, where Ludolf Nielsen had a few friends.
