Misc. Comments
The Sonata da Chiesa are intended to be used as preludes to a Mass or Religious Service, but can be performed as independent pieces at a concert. Most have been written for instruments in C, the accompanying instrument is generally organ but other keyboard instruments may be used. When played on the organ registration and (in some instances) use of the pedal organ is left to the descretion of the organist. I encourage the player to extemporize where possible, using ornamentation and figuration to decorate melodic lines in repeat sections (a good example is the beginning of Sonata 7, to decorate the long cantus-firmus like notes with extemporized figurations). The pieces range from easy to difficult.
Although some ornamentation is provided, discretion is again left to the performer (following Baroque convention).
