Queste fughe (e molte altre) furono scritte in tempi diversi nel corso di una gara di fughe, mai terminata, fra me e Michael Talbot. Diversamente dal contrappunto speculativo che ho praticato in gioventù, considero oggi il genere contrappuntistico valido solo se riesce ad esprimere buona musica per le orecchie, non solo per il cervello. Queste fughe, come quelle di Albinoni o Locatelli, sono fatte per esser suonate e per dare piacere. Si potranno eseguire comodamente su tre strumenti ad arco (quasi sempre 2 violini e un violoncello, altre volte un violino,una viola e un violoncello), ma la prima voce potrà quasi sempre essere eseguita anche da un flauto traverso, così come la terza starà bene anche su un fagotto. L'aggiunta di un basso continuo che armonizzi la linea del basso è sottintesa.
