The introduction by Belgian musicologist Ernest Closson, after a few vague general historical remarks that throw no light on the sources for this edition, establishes that following the investigations of a Ghent archivist, V(ictor) van der Haeghen (1854 - 1916), the composer, Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, was born in Ghent 14th March 1653 and died "75 years later", a presumed fact he finds puzzling. He evokes the possibility of a mix-up, but does not mention "John" Loeillet, only one Jacques and one Etienne-Joseph, both Belgian and possibly related. Although he evokes the possibility of homonymity he does not realize there were two Jean-Baptistes, one in Ghent, and the other in London, both dying fairly young with different dates than the ones proposed here.
