Commentary on the movements

  1. Chorus: Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlösen. A complex imitative movement with an imitative texture in the voices, a canon at the fourth (the chorale Herr Jesu Christ, du höchstes Gut) in the winds superimposed above.
  2. Recitativo (Alto): O Schmerz, o Elend, so mich trifft. Recitative accompanied with strings.
  3. Choral: Solls ja so sein. An unexpected location for a chorale; a plain setting with full chords.
  4. Aria (Alto): Ach lege das Sodom der sündlichen Glieder. A dance-like movement that "takes us aback with its melodic charm," offering a welcome respite from the weighty movements preceding it1.
  5. Recitativo (Tenor): Hier aber tut des Heilands Hand. Secco recitative.
  6. Aria (Tenor): Vergibt mir Jesus meine Sünden. Hemiola dominates this movement, giving it a minuet feel. Full strings and one oboe are the accompaniment.
  7. Choral: Herr Jesu Christ, einiger Trost. A plain chorale setting.
